Where can you take a balloon safari in Tanzania?

Serengeti National Park

Balloon flights operate from different areas of the park, including the central Serengeti and, subject to season and availability, areas farther west and north. Each flight follows the wind, so the route and wildlife sightings are different every morning.

From above, you may see herds crossing the grasslands, animals gathering near waterways, and the vast scale of the Serengeti ecosystem. The Great Migration can add to the experience when it is in the area, but its location and any particular sighting can never be guaranteed.

Tarangire National Park

Hot air balloon safaris also take place in Tarangire National Park. Here, the view is different: ancient baobab trees, the Tarangire River, open woodland, and the park’s wildlife create a striking landscape at sunrise. Tarangire is especially appealing if you want to add a balloon flight to a safari without travelling deep into the Serengeti.

What happens on a balloon safari?

Your morning begins with an early pickup from your lodge or camp and a transfer to the launch site. After a safety briefing, you watch the crew prepare the balloon before taking off around sunrise.

The flight usually lasts about one hour, depending on the weather and wind. Your pilot may fly higher for broad views of the landscape and lower where conditions allow. A ground crew follows the balloon and meets you after landing. The experience typically concludes with a bush breakfast before you continue your safari.

Ballooning is weather dependent, and the pilot makes the final decision about whether it is safe to fly. Wildlife sightings, flight path, exact timing, and breakfast arrangements vary by location and operator.
